When implementing a new payroll system, there is really only one way to fully test that it will work correctly; Parallel Run the new and old systems together. This means undertaking double the effort for one or more months while you calculate and pay your current payroll and calculate and test the output of your new payroll. – A very labour and skill intensive task indeed!
The activity to compare the two payrolls therefore needs to be fast and accurate, and the Technoivity Data Zymphony PPR Tool plays a core role in evaluating and signing off your payroll as fit for purpose.
Data Zymphony:
Our Data Zymphony tool is built using Microsoft Fabric, with PowerBI and PowerApps used to analyse and serve data in a scalable and trusted way. Payroll data is fed into the DataLake in Microsoft Fabric and analysed to identify where the payroll is meeting the required tolerances, and where further fine tuning of the payroll is needed.
Benefits of Data Zymphony PPR tool usage:
- Your data is secure in Fabric, and only accessible to authorised users.
- Data is quickly loaded into the tool and analysis produced, without needing to manually calculate or match records.
- Accuracy is ensured.
- History is retained for tracking of performance improvement as well as individual error and bug management.
Data at your fingertips:
The PowerBI dashboard shows an executive summary for use at board level, to demonstrate the current success running and reconciling the payroll. It also shows a payroll manager where to focus attention to fix outstanding bugs before re-running the payroll.

The data can be drilled into, with the ability to hold multiple payrolls, periods and re-runs in one simple to manage view.
With our tried and tested tool, you can evaluate the following:
- Payroll grand total
- Total for each pay element
- Total for each person
- Total for each assignment (where a person holds multiple roles each can be isolated)
- Assignment level balances
o Gross Pay
o Net Pay
o Employers Contributions
- Each element for each person (each individual row on a payslip)
Complex Mapping Management:
The new payroll system will have improvements in how pay elements are used, often rationalising down the number of elements, or splitting out explicit elements for better reporting. This means parallel runs are rarely identical and require mapping to change the names and associations of certain elements.
The Data Zymphony tool permits 1:1, 1:Many and Many:1 element mappings to take place, giving the ability to transform and align data to meet your comparison needs.
Additionally, it is common for some elements to not be part of both payroll systems, (e.g. expenses paid via payroll in one system and AP in another). So, the ability to include and exclude elements as required is managed too. This also means that the balances for Gross, Net and Employer contributions generated by each system cannot be compared like-for-like. Our tool therefore generates its own balances from both systems to compare apples with apples.
The highly configurable options to map, include and group items is very powerful, giving both micro and macro level data analysis.
Element Level Tracking and Management:
With each refresh of the payroll run, comments and investigation details can be tracked. The evaluated data is displayed to payroll administrators via Microsoft PowerApps to enable access to areas for investigation and the ability to track the issues and fixes applied to the payroll to rectify the issues found.

With each iterative run of the payroll, the prior comments are retained and presented back to users, so no knowledge is lost, and comments and bug details are visible on the PowerBI dashboard for project managers to track the progress of the work to date.
